Volunteer
Want to join us for our riparian plantings, river clean-ups, water quality monitoring, and other projects?
and you'll be the first to hear about upcoming opportunities.
Volunteers are essential to helping us achieve our mission to protect and restore the Winooski River and its tributaries. We have numerous volunteer opportunities throughout the year. If you’re interested in volunteering, we have a job for you! Projects vary by season and include riparian tree plantings (spring), water quality monitoring (summer), the Onion River Ramble (June), river clean-ups (summer/fall), river access projects, and special events.
LEARN: Education & Outreach
Water Quality Monitor: Collect water samples one day per week during the summer
Front Porch Forum: Serve as a Friends of the Winooski representative by posting our announcements (~10 per year) on your neighborhood FPF
Communications: Write an article about an experience you have had in the watershed or a special topic of interest
Tabling: We love to bring our resources out to our communities, but our small staff can't be everywhere we are invited to go unless we have some help from volunteers who are comfortable sharing their enthusiasm for rivers and our work with others
RESTORE: Stewardship
Plant Trees: Attend one or more of our tree planting events each year in early May or late October
Public Access Site Support: Make monthly visits to a public river access area near you, and let us know how it looks
River Clean-ups: Serve as a site captain, help us source and transport buckets and canoes, or pitch in to pull the junk
ENJOY: Events
Onion River Ramble and River of Light: Paddling events need many hands: help with setup, safety boaters, sweep boaters, shuttle drivers, registration, and more. There are jobs for everyone, in the water and on land.
