Fish & Wildlife Habitat Restoration: Opportunities, Hurdles, and the Power of Partnerships

Our changing climate is impacting all of the life in our watershed, and we are working to ensure that our most sensitive species have the habitat they need to survive increasing extremes in temperature, drought conditions, and flooding. Our watershed is home to some high quality habitat for brook trout, but has thousands of barriers for the trout to reach the cold headwaters they need to survive. Some of our tributary subwatersheds have the highest concentrations of wood turtles in the Northeast, but they need specific habitats for nesting, foraging, and overwintering, and those conditions are harder and harder to find, making the wood turtle, like the brook trout, a Species of Greatest Conservation Need.

Chris can share his perspective -- state, regional, and national -- on the Partners for Fish & Wildlife's approach to working for the benefit of these species, and on the important role that Friends of the Winooski can play in this critical habitat restoration program.
